Having a bad week

I have had a hellish week with my anxiety. Up to now, the last few months have been awesome in regards to my mental health. It has been better than it has been in the last four or five years. But, for some reason, this past week has just been rotten. I have had a couple of panic attacks and even been physically sick from my anxiety. I’ve been doing my best to work through it with some of my favourite self-care habits. And so, I figured, why not write down a list of all the things I know make me feel better when my mental health is taking a drop.

So, here, have an extensive (but not exhaustive) list of my favourite forms of self care:

  • Taking a long bath with bubbles and a mug of tea, or a fantastic smelling Lush product (my favourites at the moment are the Sunnyside bubble bar and the Intergalactic bath bomb), or a lot of radox after a particularly solid lifting session.
  • Adding music or an episode of one of my favourite shows to the aforementioned bath.
  • Lying in bed listening to my pump up playlist and telling myself I am awesome.
  • Journalling my thoughts after a bad day in order to process and deal with them. Negativity is easiest for me to dismiss when it is written down and thought over rationally. (I love my Happiness Planner and their additional monthly Box of Happiness.)
  • Turning my phone off, even just for an hour, and ignoring all social media. Doesn’t matter what I do in this time but no phone, no facebook, or instagram, or twitter, or tumblr, or snapchat. Nothing. Nada.
  • Baking cookies just to smell them as they cook.
  • Drinking a cup of tea.
  • Saying ‘no’ to friends or family when I really need some time for myself or I really don’t want to do something.
  • Watching a bad, mindless movie and allowing myself to actually enjoy it no matter how stupid the story is.
  • Doing my makeup. It is both methodical, thus relaxing, and uplifting when it turns out killer.
  • Going on a binge of animal videos on youtube.
  • Taking a mental health day and refusing to feel guilty about it.
  • Reading the cutest, fluffiest, sappiest fic I can find on AO3 for whichever ship I am feeling for the most that particular day. (This often turns into a fluff-fic binge).
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Boxing
  • Playing a video game. Especially an RPG where I can lose myself in another world for a while. Dragon Age II is my favourite. Hawke is perfect.
  • Reading the biographies of badass women. My current favourite is Crazy is my Superpower by AJ Mendez Brooks. Hopefully one day I’ll get to thank her for all the inspiration.
  • Reading fantasy novels with a badass female protagonist.
  • Listening to ocean sounds with my headphones on and ignoring the world.
  • Napping.
  • Colouring.
  • Writing.
  • Walking by the lake.
  • Sitting quietly, by myself, thinking about anything and everything.
  • Wearing comfortable clothes.
  • Going to bed early.
  • Eating a filling and healthy meal.
  • Shopping and treating myself to something small and nice, like a new hat or a new book.
  • Calling my Mum and/or Dad

Alright that is all for now. Hope everyone had a better week than me. Until next time ♥
